Tanks are a fantasy for most mermaids. Getting the stunning pictures, swimming around at events, and even just getting the opportunity to perform in a tank. It’s a coveted adventure! Tanks are a lot more complicated than many think. There is a lot that goes into maintenance, design, prep for performances, and even just safety steps that’s are required. This course looks at the complexities that is tank performance and educates on how to perform safely while in a tank. This course will touch on building, maintenance, materials, and performances. Finally this course will provide safety training for anyone looking to perform in a tank. This includes exits, how to avoid “tank burn” and things to be aware of when diving. Water is both amazing and dangerous, just like tanks!

Lila Jones, aka Mermaid Lila, is a marine biologist, wildlife photographer, scuba and mermaid instructor residing on the island of Maui. Her day to day life sees the impacts of human interactions with wildlife first hand which inspired the creation of this class. During the class, students will be taught what makes a wildlife interaction ethical and how to identify safe and ethical interactions with wildlife when images are seen on social media. Students are encouraged to browse social media prior to the class and bring specific images of humans/mermaids with wildlife for group discussion.

This course is designed to discuss facets of freediving that merfolk might find useful, and help you learn some of the safety considerations for extended breath holds and deeper dives. Participants who attend will leave the course with a greater appreciation for freediving and will be eligible to receive a 10% discount on a PFI Freediver Course (or equivalent) with Aquanauts Freediving in Las Vegas, Nevada. (This is a non-certification course)
The PADI Mermaid™ course includes knowledge development and at least two water skill sessions that develop more dynamic mermaid skills beyond Basic Mermaid™, including many skills that make mermaiding an underwater self-expressive art, separate from other types of diving. (Note that the PADI Mermaid™ course includes Basic Mermaid™, so you can start with PADI Mermaid™ – there is no need to take Basic Mermaid™ separately.) To enroll in a PADI Mermaid™ course at Syren Symposium, you must be at least 16 years old. You need to be able to swim at least 50m/160ft without swim aids, able to float comfortably at the surface for at least 5 mins and in good physical health.
